John Bernthal, Ph.D., is a Professor and served as Chair of the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders and Director, in the Barkley Memorial Center, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He retired in June, 2011, but he has held a variety of administrative and leadership positions. He has also served in leadership positions in professional associations and is the past President of ASHA. He has served as a consultant and site visitor to a variety of departments, programs, and agencies. Most of his publications, including textbooks and an assessment instrument, have been in the area of phonological disorders. He is interested in phonological awareness and its relationship to literacy. He also has interest in administration and selected policy issues. He continues to serve on editorial boards and as a reviewer for professional journals.
