Dr. Nelson is a Professor and College of Education and Human Sciences Institute Scholar specializing in learning and disorders of children. His major areas of interest are literacy interventions, technology-based learning tools, school-wide and individualized positive behavioral intervention and support systems. He has a national reputation as an effective researcher and received the 2000 Distinguished Initial Career Research Award by the Council for Exceptional Children. He has secured over 20 million dollars in external funding to support his research and published more than 160 articles, book chapters, and books that focus on serving children at risk of school failure. Nelson is an author of "Vocabulary learning: Tools and strategies for teaching students with learning difficulties" and "Instructional practices for students with behavioral disorders: Strategies for reading, writing, and math" published by Gilford Press as well as "Developing schoolwide, classroom, and individual intervention and support programs: A social learning approach" and "Learning to become a critical research consumer" published by Sage. He also is an author of a number of interventions and assessments used by schools nationwide: Stepping Stones to Literacy, Early Vocabulary Connections, Multiple Meaning Vocabulary Program, The Think Time Strategy, and eMeasures of Vocabulary Growth.
