Tessa McCarthy, PhD, coordinates the program in visual impairments. She completed her master's in orientation and mobility at University of Louisville. She received her teacher of students with visual impairments certification and her doctorate at Vanderbilt University. She has worked as both an orientation and mobility specialist and a teacher of students with visual impairments.

Her primary interests are related to teaching street crossings to individuals who are visually impaired or blind and strategies for individuals who read braille. Additionally, she studies strategies for increasing the methodological rigor of research in a low incidence field. She is active in several divisions of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired including: low vision, orientation and mobility, and personnel preparation.
