What am I prepared to teach with this major?

You will be prepared to teach Special Education Mild/Moderate Disabilities AND Elementary Education, grades kindergarten - six.

 

Should I declare my interest in this program before formal admission?

Students are encouraged to declare their interest and meet with the advisor for the program, Denise Howell, 402-472-8643. Her office is in Henzlik Hall. This will help you complete the program in a timely manner.

 

When may I apply for formal admission?

You may apply either September 15 or February 1 of your sophomore year.

 

What is the application process?

You will make 3 copies of the following items and bring them to room 61 in Henzlik Hall by 11 a.m. on the date of application.
Application: Oath of Honesty, Application Essay (4-6 pages), Practicum (TEAC 297A) final evaluations from your cooperating teacher and UNL supervising instructor.

 

What courses are required before I can formally apply to the program?

TEAC 331 ("Cultural Foundations of American Education")  or CEHS 200 ("Family, School & Community")

EDPS 250 ("Fundamentals of Child Development")

TEAC 297A ("Professional Practicum")

COMM 109 ("Fundamentals of Human Communication")
or 205 ("Performance of Literature")
or 209 ("Public Speaking") or 210 ("Small Group Problem Solving")

SPED 201 ("Introduction to Special Education") or 400 ("Characteristics of Exceptional Persons")

TEAC 259 ("Instructional Technology")

 

What additional requirements are there?

Current UNL students must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5, and have 30 completed credit hours. The Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST), Level 1 Tech Requirement is also required by the Nebraska Department of Education. It takes 4-6 weeks for us to receive your results, so make sure you take it a few months before applying.
 

Where can I get the forms and applications?

You may get all forms and applications by making an appointment with Denise Howell (402-472-8643), the Academic Advisor for the Dual program.  You may make an appointment online by going to  http://cehs.unl.edu/currentStudents/advisors.shtml or at 105 Henzlik Hall.
