The Program in Severe Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders

We have a unique program in Severe Disabilities / Autism at UNL has been directed by Dr. Ellin Siegel. This program provides specialized course work that can lead to a teaching endorsement or a Graduate Certificate (Preschool- 21 years) in Special Education, a Masters or Doctoral degrees. The course work in Severe Disabilities / Autism has been updated to reflect current trends and best practices in the field of Special Education. Dr. Siegel's areas of emphasis include communication intervention, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), assessment, and programming within inclusive educational settings.

This area of special education comprises a diverse group of individuals. The program at UNL provides knowledge and expertise to work with this heterogeneous group of individuals who may have autism, dual sensory impairments, intellectual disabilities, or multiple intellectual, sensory, physical or health impairments. There is a shortage of trained personnel in this field of study, both in Nebraska and nationally.  Individuals interested in graduate course work in the area of severe disabilities and mental retardation have a variety of options  from which to select.  You can take special education courses and work as a non-degree seeking student before you decide to apply to graduate school.  Students are encouraged to meet with the Director of the Severe Disabilities / Autism program to help select the most pertinent courses.  Individuals can pursue the following options:

1. Graduate level teaching endorsement, with or without a Masters degree program
2. Masters Degree Graduate Specialization
3. Graduate Certificate
4. Masters or Doctoral degree program
