The llanero was the cowboy known for traveling the tropical plains, know as llanos, of Columbia and Venezuela. The llanero was a cowboy just like in the US dealing with heat and the dry season but also dealing with the flooding in the tropical areas. The Gaucho was the well-known South American cowboy who roamed the plains in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The early gaucho hunted the wild cattle and horses on the plains. They would strip the hide off the cattle as soon as they had killed it and send the hides back to Spain. Ranching and husbandry of the cattle would come later along with beef production.
