As a fellow journalism teacher, I am constantly amazed at Doris' desire to give students good journalism experiences and her creativity in developing those opportunities. Whether it is her community journalism program that gives invaluable on-the-job training at the daily newspaper or having her newspaper students teacher the fundamentals to elementary students, she is always looking at ways for students to have meaningful experiences. I especially like her sports journalism course. I know of no other such course in a Nebraska high school, but what a great way to involve teens that are reluctant to write in other contexts.
