Freda Battey Distinguished Educator Award
The family of Freda Drath Battey, a UNL graduate and former public school teacher, has established a "Distinguished Educator Award" in her memory. Candidates for this award are nominated by students in the College of Education and Human Sciences. The criteria for the award are "excellence in teaching coupled with recognition in other complementary education activities, such as counseling of students or initiation of student-oriented programs."
The Freda Battey Distinguished Educator Award is given each year to an exemplary Nebraska secondary school teacher and only students at UNL College of Education and Human Sciences may make nominations. To make a nomination, you simply need to identify a teacher you had whose role model encouraged you to be a teacher and tell us why this teacher is outstanding. Criteria for selection are excellence in teaching and excellence in support of students in extracurricular activities such as advising of students or initiation of student oriented programs.
After we have received your nomination, we will write to the teacher and his/her principal asking for more information. The winner will be selected by a committee composed of faculty and College of Education and Human Sciences students and will be honored at a luncheon in late April. The student nominator of the winning teacher will also be invited to the luncheon. The recipient will receive an inscribed school bell and a check for $6,000, and her/his school will receive $3,000.00. The award was established in 1986 by Joan and Charles W. Battey of Shawnee Mission, Kansas and Marian (Battey) and Harold W. Andersen of Omaha, Nebraska to commemorate the life and career of their mother and mother-in-la, Freda Drath Battey, a 1923 graduate of Teacher College who was a public school teacher in Ashland, Nebraska.
