It’s been a prolific week in the awards department at Special Education and Communication Disorders.

Macy Schott, a doctoral student working toward the Au.D. degree in Audiology, was awarded a Student Investigator Grant in the Research Grants in Hearing & Balance program from the American Academy of Audiology. Schott will be collaborating with UNL Extension to evaluate a hearing conservation program designed for 4-H youth. Sherri Jones, department chair, serves as Schott’s faculty mentor.

Choonheong Lee, a Ph.D. student in audiology, has received the Vestibular Grant for Student Investigators in the Research Grants in Hearing & Balance program from the American Academy of Audiology.  Choongheon will be investigating the effects of meclizine and diazepam on mammalian vestibular function. Tim Jones is his faculty mentor.

Mackenzie Savaiano, assistant professor of practice, won the 2015 CEC Division on Visual Impairments and Deafblindness Dissertation of the Year Award.  Mackenzie’s dissertation was titled, “Comparison of Vocabulary Instruction Strategies for Students who Read Braille.”  She will be recognized at the CEC International Convention and Expo in San Diego, California in April.
