Honaker receives Editor's Award for research article

14 Aug 2015

The American Journal of Audiology has selected an article written by Assistant Professor Julie Honaker as the winner of the 2014 Editor’s Award. The article, “Impact of Fear of Falling for Patients and Caregivers: Perceptions Before and After Participation in Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation Therapy,” was published in the March 2014 edition of the journal. Honaker teaches graduate courses on vestibular and balance disorder assessment and management in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders. Her research is focused on clinical assessment and rehabilitation of balance disorder patients.

In the announcement letter, Michael Cannon, director of serial publications and editorial services for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, called the award “truly a high honor, with selection limited to the most impactful works that meet the highest quality standards in research design and presentation.”

The article, co-written by colleague Laura W. Kretschmer from the University of Cincinnati, highlighted a study that investigated the impact of fear of falling on older patients with dizziness history and their caregivers. The study also explored a better approach to reducing fall risk.

The award will be presented in November at the 2015 ASHA Convention in Denver, Colorado.
