Speech language pathology and audiology programs at UNL are alive and well and growing

10 Aug 2015

A recent article in the Omaha World Herald has raised concerns that the Speech Language Pathology and Audiology programs at UNL may be closing. This could not be farther from the truth! Our programs are alive and well and growing.

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents recently approved elimination of the undergraduate major in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology in the College of Arts and Sciences in order to consolidate the major into the College of Education and Human Sciences. All of our undergraduate and graduate programs in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology are vibrant and growing. The undergraduate major in Speech Language Pathology had 158 students and awarded 57 degrees last year. The master’s degree program in Speech Language Pathology graduated 28 students in 2013-2014 and is expecting 35 new students this fall. The doctorate (Au.D.) in Audiology will enter our largest class ever with 10 first year students joining us this fall.

We are excited about the future of our programs and we are very proud of our students. Approximately 80% of our bachelor’s degree students complete their degrees, all of our master’s degree graduates in speech language pathology have been employed within one year of graduation, and nearly 75% remain in Nebraska. We’re pleased that 100% of our audiology students are also employed upon graduation and take positions throughout the country.

The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders will celebrate its accomplishments in speech language pathology, audiology and special education at the 40th anniversary of the Barkley Memorial Center in 2016. Watch for more information about the celebration.
