Maria Rosario de Guzman TMFD Department Chair, Professor and Youth Development Extension Specialist

2004 Ph.D., Developmental Psychology, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
2001 M.A., Developmental Psychology, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
1995 B.A., Psychology, Ateneo de Manila University

My appointment is comprised of both research and extension (i.e., the "outreach arm" of the U.S. university land-grant system). I focus on issues around the intersection of culture, migration, family life, and child and adolescent development. My research has covered these issues among children, youth and families in Kenya, Mexico, Brazil, Turkey, the United States and the Philippines. Among my current projects, I am studying long-distance parenting strategies among rural-to-urban domestic care workers in the Philippines; socialization goals and ethnotheories of Asian American families in the Midwestern United States, determinants of quality of life in rural ethnic minorities in the United States, and the experiences and determinants of wellbeing among Filipino migrants in Poland.

As a Nebraska Extension faculty member, I work directly in the community to conduct research-based programming, develop educational materials and disseminate information that can help youth gain skills that will make them successful and productive members of society. In my research, I examine the factors that help children and adolescents develop prosocial behaviors (e.g., volunteerism, cooperativeness) and explore how culture impacts upon children's development. My research has examined these issues among children and adolescents in the Philippines, Brazil, Kenya, Turkey, Mexico and the U.S.

I currently supervise student research in the following program areas:
