Family Financial Planning

Students in this specialization enhance personal financial knowledge, complete a master's degree or a certificate program and develop competencies that can lead to the Certified Financial Planner designation by the CFP International Board of Standards. The program focuses on the efforts of households to improve their economic well-being through effective use of resources, and on the economic and social systems that enhance or constrain these efforts. The degree prepares students for further graduate study or for work in human services, Cooperative Extension, the private sector or the public sector. If you enjoy working with people and with numbers, consider the Family Financial Planning masters program or graduate certificate within the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies. This online financial planning curriculum lets you do course work when it's convenient for you. You can complete a masters degree or graduate certificate by taking courses that help you enhance your personal financial knowledge. It could lead to professional certification by the CPF Board of Standards.

The program was developed by Great Plains IDEA, a consortium of ten Midwestern universities, including the University of Nebraska. You can complete the program through any of the participating universities. When you select the University of Nebraska, you will take classes from the other participating universities: Iowa State, Kansas State, Montana State, North Dakota State Oklahoma State University,and South Dakota State. Your credits from those institutions will be placed on your NU transcript.

Graduate Certificate Program

The graduate certificate program consists of 18 semester credit hours. You will register for courses and pay tuition and fees to UNL. Your program adviser will send instructions and course registration materials for each course. The following six courses make up the program of studies for the certificate.

Masters Degree Program

The masters degree program requires 42 semester credit hours. Most students complete the masters program in three years while working a full-time job. You will register for courses and pay tuition and fees to UNL. Your program adviser will send instructions and course registration materials for each course. The degree, a Master of Science in Child, Youth and Family Studies with a specialization in Family Financial Planning, is made up of the six courses for the certificate program as well as the following courses:

Requirements to become a Certified Financial Planner

The mission of Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards is to foster professional standards in personal financial planning.

CFP Board requirements for certification are:
Education
Examination
Experience
Ethics

The Great Plains-IDEA Financial Planning Program on-line degree curriculum is registered with the CFP Board and satisfies the CFP Board's topic requirements; therefore, successful completion of the curricula meets the education requirements prerequisites for the CFP Certification Examination. This is not a guarantee you will pass the exam, only that you will meet the education requirements to take the exam.

After completing your education requirements, you will work with the CFP Board on examination, experience, and ethics requirements for CFP certification. As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER Professional, you will have the satisfaction of helping people solve their financial problems and reach their financial goals.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln students admitted to the Great Plains-IDEA on-line degree program are advised to obtain the Guide to CFP Certification. The guide includes applications for the exam, fee information, exam procedures and information on what constitutes the required work experience.
