Youth Development

Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of adolescence, this strengths-based curriculum supports youth to make them socially, emotionally and cognitively competent adults. The program supports positive development through the six Cs: caring/compassion, competence, character, connection, confidence and commitment. The approach examines people, places, supports, opportunities and services young people need to be happy, healthy and successful, both in theory and practice.

This program is one of a kind. Few graduate programs exist that focus solely on youth development, and the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance for the Human Sciences (GPIDEA) is the only alliance of public universities to offer it completely online. There is a critical need for trained youth development professionals. An estimated 17,000 organizations currently serve more than 30 million young people. Professionals who understand the strengths-based approach are in demand. This online youth development curriculum lets you do course work when it is convenient for you. This could lead to career advancement or directions for your work.

Two options are available: a masters degree or one of two graduate certificates.
