Kit & Dick Schmoker Reading Center relocated to Barkley Memorial Center

02 Sep 2016

The Kit and Dick Schmoker Reading Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will begin its 2016 fall session in a new home at the Barkley Memorial Center.

The Schmoker Reading Center was previously housed in the Human Sciences Building on UNL’s East Campus, but moved to Barkley room 124 in early August. Staff and tutors will welcome students to the new location when the fall session begins Thursday, Sept. 7. To access the new location, visitors are advised to turn north off of Holdrege Street at its intersection with 43rd Street. Parking is available in the lot north and east of the Barkley Center.

The Schmoker Reading Center provides one-on-one tutoring for children who are reading below grade level. UNL graduate and undergraduate students in the College of Education and Human Sciences serve as the tutors, with guidance from UNL faculty and certified teachers. Up to 90 children are tutored in each session, which are offered in fall and spring semesters, as well as during the summer.

Founded in 2004, the Schmoker Reading Center is jointly administered by the Departments of Child, Youth, and Family Studies, Special Education and Communication Disorders, and Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education.
