Program/Courses Leading to Teacher Certification in Family and Consumer Sciences

Distance Education Students:

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln participates in the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (Great Plains IDEA) which provides a clearinghouse of courses that may contribute to coursework for FCS teacher certification. (Note: Teacher licensure/certification requirements vary by state, so the first step toward certification is to contact an FCS teacher training institution in the state where you want to teach.)

To take a UNL course that fulfills requirements from another state, follow the instructions at this web site.

Or search the course Great Plains IDEA catalog.

Students Interested in Obtaining a Degree or Licensure from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln through on campus class:

In order to get certified/licensed to teach FCS in Nebraska, students can contact the FCS teacher educator at the nearest Nebraska university or state college for information regarding becoming certified through each institution.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is one of the programs that prepares students to meet the requirements for the Nebraska Secondary Teaching Certificate with endorsement in Family and Consumer Sciences. Students may also combine FCS with other subject matter areas that will lead to teaching endorsements in both FCS and other areas. In addition, for those who may wish to teach in non-formal settings, the program provides the theory and experience necessary for becoming an educator in these settings. Additional positions may include extension educators, curriculum specialists, service unit educators, training and development or human resource professionals and other educators in government, business, or industry. These degree and licensure options are outlined below.
