Comprehensive Examination Information

The Graduate College requires a comprehensive examination as a graduate degree requirement. Departments are left to develop their own approach to this examination. Students take their Comprehensive Examination when they have completed the coursework on the Program of Study that is filed with the Graduate Colllege.

Below are the current Comprehensive Examination requirements for the different degrees:

  1. Masters Level Comprehensive Examination for Students in P-12 Education
The Comprehensive Examination for all degrees in P-12 education is done by constructing a portfolio. Please link to Professional Portfolio for School Leaders. Included in this group are those seeking Administrative Certification and Endorsement at the entry level (i.e. principal or building level).
  2. Masters Level students in higher education, sports administration, human resource development or student affairs
The Comprehensive Examination is a written exam consisting of four questions. Please contact the department’s Graduate Secretary to sign up for these Comprehensive Exams. With arrangements for proctoring, these can be taken off campus.
  3. Doctoral students
The comprehensive examinations are arranged by the chair of the supervisory committee. Different chairs have different ways of administering the exam. Passing the Comprehensive Examination is a necessary requirement before advancing to candidacy. Approval of the supervisory committee is required. When you have completed your program of studies, you should contact your supervisory chair about comps.
