The Educational Leadership and Higher Education (ELHE) program is a generalist program, providing leadership development education coupled with foundational studies in higher education. Students have opportunities to include in their degree program areas which may be of special interest. In the past areas such as learning, teaching, student affairs, distance education, business affairs, academic administration, institutional advancement, instructional technology and others have been chosen for special attention by students in the program.
The program is not described as either online or on-campus. It is available to students who wish to come to campus for study, for those who wish to learn in an online environment and for those who may wish to pursue studies in a combination of on-campus and off-campus experiences.
The program is built on the concept that successful educational leaders must be able to:
- demonstrate vision
- explore and create
- plan
- communicate
- decide
- execute
- motivate
- perform at their highest level of ability
Degree objective: Pd. D or Ed. D:
Two options are available to students, a Ph. D. or the Ed. D. A general program plan provides guidance for the student and the advisor when choosing coursework. While there are expectations and limits, students have opportunities to choose from course offerings throughout the university.
The ELHE doctoral specialization includes course work and other experiences in the following areas:
- leadership and foundational courses
- cognate courses
- doctoral seminars
- internships/practicums
- dissertation
- research tools
Leadership and foundational courses are designed to provide an extensive grounding in the major knowledge and skill areas that are necessary for educational leaders. Relevant parts of other disciplines are integrated into a series of core courses that form the basis for developing higher education leadership capabilities.
Cognate courses are included to give students opportunities to study in areas outside of Educational Administration that may be of special interest or may be supportive of their educational interests.
Doctoral seminars are based on the application of concepts and techniques to effective decision and policy making and execution, will provide a range of experiences in informed practice. While the program is not highly specialized, the seminar component is designed to provide an area of emphasis consistent with the student's needs.
The following topics are included among the courses in Educational Leadership and Higher Education (ELHE):
