Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC)

Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC) is an indirect service delivery model wherein a school psychologist works with a parent and teacher together to promote collaborative, problem solving relations across home and school settings (see "Conjoint Behavioral Consultation: A Procedural Manual," Sheridan, Kratochwill, & Bergan, 1996; published by Plenum Press). In CBC, the needs of a student are identified and analyzed through a structured behavioral assessment process. An intervention is designed based on the function of the behavior and practical considerations. The intervention is then implemented across the home and school, and evaluated in a systematic, experimental fashion. An accumulating body of research supports the model with students with various presenting problems, background environments, and disabilities.

The University of Nebraska School Psychology program has a specialty in CBC, funded by the US Department of Education through the year 2001. The specialty track is designed to train school psychology graduate students in the processes and procedures of CBC. Each year, approximately 6 students are enrolled in the specialty track and involved as consultant trainees. Consultants in training receive extensive didactic and applied experiences under close supervision. Upon demonstrating competence in CBC interview skills, students are assigned to schools in the Lincoln area where they conduct actual cases with the parents and teachers of students with behavioral and emotional disabilities who are being educated in regular classroom environments.

Students on the grants receive $12,000 annually and a full tuition waiver for the academic year (9-12 credit hours per semester).
