Internships

All students must take a year of internship as the culminating experience in their program. While this is normally done on a full-time basis, half-time internships are also possible. Ed.S. students must complete a minimum of 1500 clock hours (a full school year) of internship, while Ph.D. students must complete a minimum of 2000 clock hours (a full calendar year) of internship.

All internships are supervised by both university faculty and a field-based, psychologist, and must include at least one semester of work in a school setting (exceptions can be made for doctoral students who have prior school-based experience as a school psychologist).

Consistent with the goal of providing students with an opportunity to synthesize and integrate the material and skills acquired in prior course work, the internship stresses a broad range of experiences across the full spectrum of school psychological services.

Most Ed.S. students complete their internship in local school districts, while many doctoral students apply successfully to the Nebraska Internship Consortium in Professional Psychology (NICPP), although a wide range of other APA-approved internship options are also available.

The NICPP is a Consortium of agencies (e.g., schools, hospitals, clinics) that have banded together to provide diverse and high-quality training experiences for students during their final year of graduate study.

The NICPP is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association and is administered by the School Psychology Program.

Additional information regarding school psychology internships is available on request and should be consulted by all students at least one semester prior to applying for internship.

Students may not undertake an internship in a setting in which they are currently employed unless appropriate arrangements are undertaken to ensure that both the duties and supervisors for the student have been changed entirely.
