Masters Degree

The Master of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a specialization in Youth Development includes 36 semester hours of course work. Twenty-eight hours come from courses required by the GPIDEA program. These core courses include nine 3-credit-hour courses and a 1-credit-hour professional development seminar.

Students in this specialization may choose from one of the following options to finish their masters program at UNL:

Option I program of study will include:

29 semester hours of required course work plus 6 thesis hours and minimum 1 credit hour of practicum for a total of 36 credit hours.

Option III program of study will include:

28 semester hours of required course work plus 1 credit hour of Project or Thesis (with up to 5 optional Project/Thesis elective hours) and 1 credit hour of Practicum (with up to 3 Practicum elective hours) for a total of 36 required credit hours.

Students who are enrolled through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be assigned an academic adviser as all Masters students are assigned. Project/thesis hours and practicum will be coordinated with the academic adviser and a practicum experience established in the student's local area.

Contemporary Youth Issues (2 cr each/may take 3 of these; examples include: Violence, Youth Appearance and Dress)

Administration and Program Management
Youth Development
Youth Professionals as Consumers of Research
Proseminar in Youth Development (1 cr)
Project/Thesis (1 cr required; may be taken for up to 5 additional cr)
Practicum (1 cr required; may be taken for up to 2 additional cr)
