Family and Consumer Sciences

College of Education and Human Sciences

Graduate Degree with Teacher Certification

This option allows students with a bachelors degree to work toward a masters degree and certification/licensure in Family and Consumer Sciences Education.

Students complete 20 hours of subject matter graduate courses, 10 hours of FACS curriculum and theories courses, a thesis or scholarly project, and student teaching. Students should have their transcripts reviewed to determine the courses that must be taken to meet Nebraska Department of Education requirements for certification in Family and Consumer Sciences. Some undergraduate courses may be needed to fulfill these requirements.

For more information, you can visit the web site for graduate degrees in the FACS department. That page contains a link to the FACS masters handbook, which contains more detailed information about course requirements and program options.

Interested students should apply to UNL Graduate Studies. You will need to submit two official transcripts of your Bachelors degree work, three letters of recommendation, your GRE scores, and a personal statement.

Students must also meet the requirements below to be admitted to the FCS licensure program. Students can apply to the program while taking courses:
1. Completion of at least six hours in Education and Human Sciences.
2. Tentative long range plan approved by advisor.
3. Overall undergraduate GPA of 2.50. Only University of Nebraska-Lincoln courses will be used to determine GPA.
4. Demonstration of competence in basic skills (reading, writing, and math) as evidenced by a passing score on an accepted basic skills test (PPST Pre Professional Skills Test).
