Transportation

Transportation may appear to be a great challenge for you. If you don’t have a car, some remote important and interesting places in Lincoln may be not available for you. Owning a car can give you freedom to get around, but it can be very expensive. So, what are your options? First, you may rely on city buses remembering that they run only from 6:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m. and do not run on Sunday. Second, you may make friends with other students who have cars and be a bit dependable on them. Third, you may buy a used car, but before doing this, please, think of all expenses you may have in the future (taxes, gas, oil, repairs, automobile insurance, etc.) Lastly, you can walk that is good for your health and … free but often time consuming lots of your time.

Here is useful information about transportation in Lincoln from UNL International Affairs Exchange Visitor Handbook http://www.unl.edu/iaffairs/orientation_new/chapter2.pdf

City Buses
Schedules of bus routes and times may be obtained from the Information Desk on the main floor of the Nebraska Union, or from any bus driver. For regular bus riders, the purchase of a monthly pass may save you money. Faculty/staff online bus pass order: http://parking.unl.edu
Exact change (the precise fare) of your bus pass is required. Call the Lincoln Transportation System at 476-1234 for more information or go to http://www.ci.lincoln.ne.us/city/pworks/startran/index.htm

Star-Shuttle
The Star-Shuttle has a route limited to the downtown area, including the City Campus.

Intercampus Bus
During fall and spring semesters, buses run regularly between City Campus and East Campus. Schedules are available in the Union. Fare is free with your bus pass. Schedules are available in the Union

Taxicabs
Taxicabs are probably more expensive in the U.S. than in your own country. Consult “Taxicabs” in the Telephone Directory yellow pages for a number to call. In Lincoln, taxicabs are not readily available even in busy areas.

Bicycles (Bikes)
Bicycles are a popular means of transportation for university students. Several stores in Lincoln have new and used bicycles for sale, and repair service is available. Check in the Telephone Directory yellow pages and on bulletin boards in the Nebraska Union and residence halls for information on bikes for sale. Bicycle parking racks are available at many campus locations. LOCK YOUR BICYCLE! Use a case-hardened chain and padlock rather than a plastic coated cable and secure both wheels and frame to the rack.

Automobiles
Cars are expensive to operate and maintain. In addition to the purchase price, the owner-operator is responsible for sales tax, operating expenses (gas, oil, repairs), annual state and property taxes, and automobile insurance. You must register your car at the County Clerk’s Office at 625 N. 46 Street. When registering your car, bring your title, proof of auto insurance, and sales tax receipt. Student drivers must have valid Nebraska Driver’s licenses (available at 500 West “O” St. Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)

If you buy a car, it must be insured BEFORE it is driven. If you wish to finance a car, most companies require that you purchase comprehensive car insurance before you are allowed to take the car. Adequate insurance is EXPENSIVE and ESSENTIAL! Look in the Telephone Directory yellow pages for car insurance companies or go to the Student Legal Services Center for advice.
