Paula Jakopovic

Paula has been learning about Japanese Lesson Study--an idea
currently making its way into the center of math education in the
United States as a mode of professional development for experienced
teachers. Paula is extending her study to the local context. She is
interviewing district personnel here in Lincoln to better understand
professional development offerings and the potential and problems of
considering implementing some form of lesson study within LPS. Paula
will write her honors thesis on Japanese Lesson Study and it's
implications for the professional development of elementary teachers
in the area of mathematics.

Algebra: Curriculum or a Course?
The research project will study algebra as a course taught in the eighth
grade as opposed to algebra as a curriculum throughout the elementary and
middle school career. The project will look at defining algebra, and what is
meant when one "learns algebra." Within this realm, the project will take
into consideration the issues in the mathematical curriculum if one is going
to learn "algebra" in grade eight. Some considerable subtopics may include:
what should be taught in the curriculum (primary and intermediate) and how
division plays a role in regards to algebra. In addition, the project
will take a look at how algebra is taught, including the mathematical
procedures and processes which take place. A question that will be
investigated includes, "What do teachers need to know about algebra
in order to teach students ways to be successful in algebra?"
