Increased Knowledge Leads to Improved Instruction
The Math Matters Program provides a balanced approach to math instruction. It
gives practicum students a solid grounding in math content that is woven into
math methods. The practicum students are involved in a classroom setting that
allows them a full academic year to apply what they have been learning. I observed
my practicum students develop confidence in their own understanding of mathematics
and in their ability to provide meaningful instruction to second grade students.
The practicum students’ instruction became clearer because of their deeper
understandings of mathematics. Their delivery became more thoughtful and appropriate
because of their involvement in the math methods class and their understanding
go second grade students. I feel that in this full year program the practicum
students gained a better understanding of mathematics content and methods. This
benefited my second grade students but the true beneficiaries with be the practicum
students’ future pupils.
