Estimated Expenses for Dietetic Interns

The following is a list of some of the expenses you will incur during the experience component of the program. Of course, there are many variables and expenses are at best only approximations of various expenses during the year. It is hoped that this information will be of some help to you in planning your budget.

Materials Fee - $100.00 will be collected at the beginning of the Internship Program to cover printing costs for materials. In addition students may need $100.00 for books.
Room and Board - Students provide their own living arrangements. Accommodations are available in the residence halls on campus.
Transportation - Students must have a car. All transportation to meetings and affiliation assignments will be the student's own expense.
Professional Meetings - Students will attend local/state professional meetings and conventions. Approximately $150 will be needed during the year to cover registration costs and membership fees.
Tuition/Admission Fee to Graduate College - There is a $45.00 application fee for admission to the Graduate College.
Students accepted into the dietetic internship program will be required to satisfactorily complete 10-12 hours of graduate credit in the fall semester. Students will register for 6 hours of graduate credit for the dietetic internship in the spring semester.
The 2008-2009 tuition rates are $237.50 per graduate credit hour for residents and $640.25 per graduate credit hour for non-residents. In addition you will need to pay approximately $420.70 in program and facilities fees and $242.00 in the spring semester of the dietetic internship program.
Uniforms - Students are required to provide their own white labcoats. Students are expected to adhere to the appropriate dress code for each facility.
Health Insurance - Health insurance is required. Students are eligible for the University's Student Health Insurance Plan.
Criminal and Abuse Background Check - While not required for application, final admission to the program is dependent upon completing a criminal and abuse background check. The UNL dietetic internship program hires an outside vendor to conduct criminal and abuse background checks for incoming UNL interns. Interns are responsible for the cost of this check. The cost varies depending on state and the number of places the intern has lived in the last 7 years. Average cost is about $60, but may be more or slightly less. The results of the checks will be maintained in the intern’s placement file; of course, if the criminal and abuse background check reveals questionable information, an intern may be denied direct patient/client access in precepting facilities. This will result in unsuccessful completion of the program. Upon acceptance to the UNL Dietetic Internship, the “authorization background check application form" will be sent to the intern.
Professional Liability Insurance - Liability insurance is required and available at a cost of approximately $25.00. Information for obtaining liability insurance will be made available after acceptance into the program.
ADA Affiliate Membership - Students are expected to become Affiliate Members of the American Dietetic Association. The $49.00 membership fee includes a year's subscription to the professional journal of the association.
Fees due to ADA (on completion of program) - ADA Dues - $105.00. ADA Registration Examination Fee - $200.00. (All ADA fees are subject to change).
Holidays/Vacations - Students will be granted both a Memorial Day Holiday and Independence Day Holiday. In addition, students will have up to two emergency days to use at their discretion upon consulting with the program director. These days can be for illness.
Financial Aid - Students who need to borrow funds for college expenses should inquire at the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, 16 Canfield Administration Building, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE 68588-0411, (402)472-2030.
