Ian M. Newman

NPCADA Director

A native of New Zealand, Professor Newman completed his education in the United States and holds degrees from George Williams College, Aurora University, and the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana. He completed post-doctoral work at Harvard School of Public Health. He has taught at George Williams College, University of Tennessee, University of Nebraska Medical Center and University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and as a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore and Mahidol University, Salaya, Thailand.

He is a former staff member of the World Health Organization, South East Asia Regional Office. His principal research interest is understanding the health behaviors of young people in culturally diverse settings.

Dshell:

Duane F. Shell

Research Associate Professor

Educational Psychology

Duane Shell holds a B.S.E. degree in social studies, history and psychology, a M.S. in human development and family, and a Ph.D. in educational psychology, all from the University of Nebraska. His experiences range from computer programming, teaching of computer programming, serving as a family teacher in the transitional learning program at Boy's Town in Omaha, Nebraska, and working as a professor and researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Duane's interests center around understanding self-efficacy and expectancies and their effect on motivation, learning, and behavior. He has studied the relation of self-efficacy and expectancies to reading, writing and academic achievement, and more recently he has studied the role of self-efficacy and expectancies in adolescent health-related behaviors, such as tobacco and alcohol use. Duane is also an experienced program evaluator, and has evaluated educational programs funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, and the National Science Foundation.

Maas:

Michelle Maas

Administrative Assistant

Michelle Maas earned a BA in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1992. Her interest is in providing support to cross-cultural and multi-cultural projects to improve health. Michelle is also a Suzuki method piano teacher, amateur writer, and traveler.

Stroebel

Julia Stroebel

Administrative Assistant

Julia Stroebel is a 2007 graduate of Doane College - Lincoln with a BA in Communications. She is beginning graduate study in Gerontology with an emphasis on long term care-giving, Alzheimer’s and thanatology. Julia enjoys her family, cooking, studying and her three miniature dachshunds.
