My lab discovered a novel modification of histones: the covalent binding of the vitamin biotin to histones, mediated by holocarboxylase synthetase (HCS). My research program focuses on the roles of histone biotinylation and other epigenetic marks in gene regulation, chromatin structure, and genome stability. Examples include the repression of transposable elements; epigenetic marks in assisted reproductive technology, pluripotent cells, and engineered tissues; and the characterization of HCS-protein complexes.
