Epithelial cells within the liver include hepatocytes that synthesize bile and cholangiocytes that modify and transport bile to the small intestine. Recent interest in fatty liver disease has paralleled the increase in overweight and obesity, with significant efforts devoted to understanding hepatocyte injury along the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) spectrum. Of interest, a significant proportion of NAFLD patients, in addition to hepatocyte damage, have evidence of biliary injury and proliferation. The Mott lab has begun to assess the role of cholangiocyte injury in NAFLD.
 
Dr. Mott completed the combined M.D./Ph.D. program at Saint Louis University in 2004 followed by one year of residency training in Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN. He then began the study of cholangiocytes and microRNAs as a post-doctoral fellow in 2005 in the lab of Dr. Gregory Gores. He became a junior faculty member in Internal Medicine at Mayo from 2008 to 2011, when he joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UNMC where he is currently an Assistant Professor.
