Phi Delta Kappa International

Phi Delta Kappa International is a professional organization for men and women in education. Founded in 1906, it now has over 100,000 members and over 660 chapters scattered across the United States, Canada, and 12 other countries. Its concentration is, however, in the United States. Its members include teachers and administrators at the K-12 level, college and university faculty, undergraduate students who have reached the student-teaching level, graduate students, and specialists from other education fields. Included in this group are most of the leaders and policy makers in education. Phi Delta Kappa also has a chapter undergraduate student membership available to those who are embarked on a program leading to teacher certification.

Phi Delta kappa is active at all levels of education. While it is nonpolitical and nonpartisan, it freely acknowledges that it is an advocate for the public schools. This does not mean that Phi Delta Kappa is a mindless defender of the public schools. On the contrary, it recognizes that the public schools must improve significantly if they are to serve us in the new century. Neither does the commitment to public schools imply any bias against private education. Several of Phi Delta Kappa's chapters are located at private schools, and many of its members are educators from the private sector. this seems appropriate given Phi Delta Kappa's objective of providing a forum in which issues relating to education can be considered with all points of view represented. Phi Delta Kappa believes the one commitment that binds us together is the desire to promote quality education for children and adults of all levels.
