The Mary Mitchell Fashion Excellence Awards are made possible through an endowed gift of Omaha resident Mary Mitchell and her late husband John, who established a fund in 2012 through the NU Foundation to underwrite the costs of awards to students participating in departmental competitions including runway shows. The Mitchells hoped to help our students to move closer to realizing their academic and career dreams and aspirations.

Our guest jurors selected the four award recipients’ works from among the more than 125 garments that graced the runway. Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design acknowledges with gratitude the generosity of the Mitchells.

The award winners are:

Mary Mitchell Fashion Excellence Award Best of Show $1000, Assembled Origami by Kaitlyn Coufal. Kaitlyn's entry was constructed using metallic brocade, draping, and 3D origami shapes.

Mary Mitchell Fashion Excellence Award of Distinction $500, Guarded Chaos by Hannah Flores. Hannah's jacket and bodice used sportswear twill; her skirt, dyed rayon challis employing Katano shibori dipped into discharge bath.

Mary Mitchell Fashion Excellence Award Honorable Mention $250, Modern Geisha by Liz Chu. Liz used a repurposed obi that she deconstructed and remade into a cardigan shell. She hand-painted details on the dress.

Mary Mitchell Fashion Excellence Award Honorable Mention $250 Velvet Revolution, by Sophie Hines, who used velvet, leather, stretch denim, spandex stretch mesh, fold-over elastic, buckles, d-rings, large ball-chain, cording, and bias tape in her provocative design.
