Matthew Klare, National Dropout Prevention Center for Students with Disabilities, provided an overview of dropout prevention, intervention, and recovery, particularly for students with disabilities. He described a risk calculator and explained how it can be used to intervene with high risk students. Robert Mislevy, Frederic M. Lord Chair in Measurement and Statistics at Educational Testing Service, presented a talk, "Some Conceptions about Evidence-Centered Assessment Design." Mislevy's talk focused on concepts of assessment as evidentiary argument and layers in assessment. Lutfi Abu-Elheiga, Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, presented “A New Mechanism for Treating Obesity: Targeting a Master Regulator for Lipid Synthesis by a Small Molecule.” Abu-Elheiga’s research interests focus on the hormonal and dietary regulation of fatty acid metabolism in diseases and adverse health conditions, particularly the contemporary epidemic of obesity and related complications such as diabetes. Abstract
Robert Coplan, professor Carleton University presented, "Speaking Up for the Quiet Ones: Shy Children at School." About 15% of young children are considered extremely shy, routinely experiencing fear and anxiety in social contexts, especially in school settings. Coplan highlighted results from an ongoing program of research.

Vernon Miller, member of the Thunder Clan, Omaha Tribe of Nebraska, is the business teacher at Umonhon (Omaha) Nation Public Schools on the Omaha Tribal Reservation in Macy, Nebraska. Miller was named Teacher of the Year by the National Indian Education Association in 2010, was appointed chairman of the Omaha Tribal Election Commission in 2011, and was named to Indian Country's top 40 under 40 this year.
