Kane to give talk April 9 as part of BUROS/ETS lecture series

28 Mar 2012

The Buros Center for Testing in collaboration with Educational Testing Service is hosting the sixth installment of the annual BUROS/ETS lecture series on April 9, 2:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in Teachers College Hall, room 139. Open discussion follows at a reception in the Buros library.

Michael Kane will offer a presentation entitled, "The Argument-based Approach to Validation."

Kane is holder of the Samuel J. Messick Chair in Test Validity at ETS, the first person to have received this honor. He is most renowned for his work in validity theory and practice and has written many articles and chapters on the subject, including the chapter “Validation” in the fourth edition of Educational Measurement.  In his lecture, Kane will discuss how explicit recognition of the inferences and assumptions underlying the interpretation and use of test scores can guide the process of validation by identifying which kinds of evidence are needed to evaluate the claims being made.

Kane has had a long and distinguished career teaching at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; the State University of New York at Stony Brook; the University of Iowa; and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has served as Director of Research at the National Conference of Bar Examiners, as Vice President for Research and Development and Senior Research Scientist at American College Testing (ACT) in Iowa City, and as Director of Test Development at the National League for Nursing.
