Meisels to speak Nov. 11: "Tested Before Their Time? Accountability and Early Learning"

28 Oct 2013

The Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies presents Samuel Meisels, Executive Director, Buffett Early Childhood Institute. Meisels will present his talk as part of the Helen Kelley Symposium for Excellence in Education.

Meisels will speak Nov. 11, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m at the East Campus Union (rooms to be posted). The talk will be followed by breakout sessions 3:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m.

Meisels' talk will address the pressure to demonstrate the effectiveness of pre-K programs and to evaluate young children's readiness for school, which is fueling mistaken assumptions about how young children lean and how best to assess their growth and development.

Using the Head Start National Reporting System as an example of high-stakes early childhood testing and observational assessment as an alternative, this presentation focuses on the importance of developing context-rich, responsive assessments that reflect children's complex learning patterns, conform to rigorous standards, and represent valid and meaningful ways of evaluating children's learning.
