About Graduate Fellowships

There is no work or service requirement associated with the fellowship payment. Students who receive a fellowship may accept a graduate assistant.

Eligibility

Fellowship recipients must be full-time students, either registered for a minimum of nine credit-hours or granted full-time status each semester during the period of their appointment. Fellowships are available to newly admitted and current graduate students in a CYAF degree program either on-campus or online.

Graduate Fellowship Stipends
Tax Law
The provisions of the tax law require students who are degree candidates to report fellowship awards as taxable income to the extent such awards exceed “course-related expenses”. The IRS does not require institutions to withhold tax with respect to fellowship payments nor does it require institutions to report these payments, except in the case of certain nonresident aliens.

Paperwork
All fellowship recipients will be required to complete payroll paperwork, even though no work requirement is associated with the fellowship payment. The payroll paperwork will be sent with the letter of offer.

A signed letter of offer and thank-you note to the donor(s) will be receipt of the fellowship acceptance. Information about the thank-you note will be in the letter of offer.

The Edgren Fellowship requires a signed form, instead of letter of offer, to be returned to the Department office.

Stipends
Stipends will be direct deposited into your checking account on the date(s) stated in the letter of offer. The Chancellor’s Fellowship has a monthly stipend that is paid on the last working day of the month. The Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies Fellowship stipends are usually paid out at the beginning of each semester stated in the letter of offer.

Notification
Award letters for the Chancellor’s Fellowship and the Edgren Tuition Fellowship Program will be sent out before April 15. All other fellowship award letters will be mailed no later than June 15.
