Orienting, Assisting, and Supervising Graduate Teaching Assistants

  1. The Office Supervisor will make arrangements for office space and other equipment. In addition, a support staff person will explain office procedures related to clerical needs and supplies for teaching.
  2. The Department Chair will assign the faculty member who has taught the course to serve as a mentor for the temporary instructor. The Assistant Chair will work with the assigned faculty member to insure the graduate teaching assistant:
    • is given the previous course syllabi and sample texts.
    • can identify the major theories, research and concepts to be covered in the class.
    • is instructed on how to use Blackboard and provide him/her with the basics of this service.
    • discusses the instructor handbook and answers any questions.
  3. The Department Chair may visit the Graduate Assistant’s classroom or review materials on Canvas for online courses at least once to evaluate his/her teaching during the first two semesters the instructor has been employed. After the first two semesters, the Department Chair may visit the instructor’s classroom at the Chair’s discretion or the instructor’s request.
  4. The Department Chair reviews all student evaluations each semester and may schedule a meeting to discuss a course evaluation with the Graduate Teaching Assistant.
