The football games, the education classes I took at UNL. The Reading class I took from Mrs. Cavett. (She used to tell us stories about her son, Dick, and his friend, Johnny (Carson).
Elementary Teacher
This is my 46th year of teaching. I started my career in Melbourne, Australia teaching Preps (Kdg).
I was one of many teachers from the USA who were sent over to Australia so the teachers there could go back to school to get their degrees. They already had a 2 year teaching license. We were hired to teach for two years, and then they could get their jobs back when they were done with school. Since I was NOT a permanent teacher, I got the grade nobody else wanted each year. I ended staying 4 years and applied for permanency. I taught K, 2/3 combination class, 1st grade, then 2nd grade. My husband and I moved back to Omaha,Nebraska in 1977 at Christmas. I substituted for 5 months and was hired in Plattsmouth, NE to teach Kdg. in the fall of 1978. I have been in Plattsmouth ever since and have taught K, 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade. I was trained in Reading Recovery in 2002/03, and have been a Reading Specialist ever since. I plan to retire at the end of this year.
If teaching and working with kids is not your passion, you will not like the job. If it is, it's a great profession and is so rewarding. If you get into teaching for the money, you will burn out quickly. If possible, start on your Master's Degree as soon as you can.
