Su Presents at 11th Chinese Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Conference in China.

Dr. Qiaozhu Su, an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences at UNL was invited by the Chinese Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to present her research work at the 11th Chinese Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Scientific Conference held on August 21-23, 2014, Xiamen, China.

$11.3 Million Award Received from NIH for the Nebraska Center for the Prevention of Obesity Diseases

This August, Dr. Janos Zempleni, Director of the Nebraska Gateway to Nutrigenomics, secured $11.3 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health for the creation of a research center.

Scott Baier Selected as Winner in the 2014 American Society for Nutrition’s Graduate Student Research Awards Competition

Scott Baier, a PhD candidate in Dr. Janos Zempleni’s lab in the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences, was selected as a winner in the American Society for Nutrition’s Graduate Student Research Awards Competition.  Scott presented his abstract, “MicroRNAs in bovine milk are bioavailable in healthy adults and down-regulate reporter gene activity in human kidney HEK-293 cell cultures,”  at an oral competition during the ASN’s Scientific Sessions and Annual Meeting at the Experimental Biology 2014 conference April 24-30, in San Diego, CA.

Zempleni to Receive Outstanding Investigator Award for 2014 at EB

Dr. Janos Zempleni, professor of nutrition and health sciences and animal science, will receive the 2014 Outstanding Investigator Award from a research interest section of the American Society for Nutrition.

The award, announced by the society's Vitamin and Mineral Research Interest Section, will be presented April 26 at the 2014 Experimental Biology conference in San Diego, Calif. The annual meeting includes more than 14,000 scientists and exhibitors representing six sponsoring societies and multiple guest societies.

Thank you for five years of service to Dr. Angie Pannier

After five years of service on the NGN Leadership Team, Angie Pannier, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering, has decided to step down from that office.  Angie (pictured left) has done an excellent job, moving the NGN forward to where we are right now. Angie’s five years of service, included NGN’s near-hits on a T32 training grant and COBRE grant applications. NGN Director, Dr. Janos Zempleni, is pleased to report that Angie intends to stay involved in NGN Affairs as an active member.

Dr. Janos Zempleni Presents Talk at International Symposium in Seoul, Korea

Seoul, Korea was the site of the October 25, 2013, International Symposium on Nutrigenomics and Personalized Food sponsored by the Korea Food Research Institute (KFRI).  The organizers of the symposium state “ . . . diseases, especially metabolic diseases, could be predicted through decoding the personal information such as genes and life style. In particular, foods we consume daily may contribute to a larger extent to our well-being than previously expected.

Q. Wang - IANR Global Engagement Program Summer Exchange Student Participant.

Qiwei Wang, a sophomore at Northwest Ag & Forestry University, spent July 11 to August 9, 2013, in the laboratory of Dr. Janos Zempleni. Qiwei participated in the 2013 Research Summer Exchange program sponsored by the Institute of Agricultural and Natural Resources’ Global Engagement office. During her stay, Qiwei participated in a research project that addresses the effects of posttranslational modification of enolase-1 on glycolytic activity in humans.

The NGN Director, Dr. Janos Zempleni, has edited the new edition of the prestigious Handbook of Vitamins. This leading text on vitamin biochemistry and nutrition is now in its fifth edition, and names Drs.
