As professor and chair of the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Mary Ann mentors faculty and staff at all career stages to reach their goals in research, teaching, Extension, and outreach.
UNL's chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) seeks to improve the research environment for women and all members of the UNL community. It is here that Mary Ann serves on the Steering Committee. (2020-2022).
Additionally, she is active with the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) including the Nominations Committee for the Board of Directors, the Fellows Selection Committee, as well as the Strategic Planning Committee (2022). With ASN, she also served as President from 2017-2018.
On behalf of the Association of Nutrition Departments and Programs (ANDP), Mary Ann serves on the Board of Directors, as Chair-elect (2021), Chair (2022), and Past-chair (2023). ANDP collaborates with other educational institutions, government agencies, professional organizations, and industry regarding common interests of academic nutrition units in higher education in the US. More than 65 organizations are currently members of ANDP.
During her time at the University of Georgia, Mary Ann’s academic career focused on aging, nutrition and chronic disease self-management, and training students and health professionals in food and nutrition policies to ensure access to affordable, safe, and wholesome foods.
