I have an active research program focused on how gene expression is regulated. Historically we have used two fungal model systems to investigate basic mechanisms of gene expression - the Baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to understand how mRNA decay pathways regulate gene expression and the human opportunistic pathogen Candida albicans to understand how fungal organisms use quorum sensing, a type of intercellular signaling, to regulate morphogenesis and for host pathogen interactions. We use a combination of molecular genetics and bioinformatics. We are now also beginning to investigate the molecular mechanisms for the changes in human gene expression caused by dietary miRNAs.
