I have used various mouse models of autoimmunity to address the role ofT cells in the causation of immune-mediated damage triggered by microbes. These include experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis for multiple sclerosis, experimental autoimmune and viral myocarditis for dilated cardiomyopathy/heart failure, and experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis for uveitis in humans. I am now developing the T cell receptor transgenic mouse for cardiac myosin that permits us to dissect the immune mechanisms of myocardial infarction/cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure, and also creating mutant viruses of Coxsackievirus as vaccine candidates to prevent heart disease and diabetes.
