27 TCD majors spent a week recently in New York City, learning the inner workings of the fashion and textile industry through the 2011 edition of the annual TCD Professional Study Tour. Students met with numerous industry representatives including magazine editors of Shape magazine; the  art director of the major apparel company Jones Group; a production manager;  a sales director; a designer at Natori; and the head visual merchandiser of SAKS Fifth Avenue. Meetings were held with TCD alums who hold key positions in companies such as Nicole Miller, Apollo Jeans and J. Crew. On location in the garment district students were directed through production offices, showrooms, a trend forecasting agency, CAD offices and even a midtown garment factory. Textile development was addressed at Invista, a company that develops products with Lycra fiber. Museum visits included the Metropolitan Museum of Art to view the acclaimed Alexander McQueen exhibition Savage Beauty, and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum (Smithsonian Institution) to view Color Moves: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay. The tour participants also attended a performance of the American Ballet Theatre at the Metropolitan Opera in Lincoln Center. A harbor cruise and a dinner with TCD alums working in NYC rounded out the itinerary. TCD Professor Dr. Barbara Trout and Senior Lecturer Carol Easley organized the tour and accompanied the students, and both reported that this was one of the best NY fashion industry tours to date.
