Ms. Gong’s exhibition features a series of fabric panels and columns imprinted with imagery inspired by door patterns found in China and America. Exploring ideas symbolized by doors and doorways, the work partitions the gallery, allowing the viewer to pass through and around the individual pieces. Weifang Gong, an alumna of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design, completed the collection as part of her thesis work, with Wendy Weiss, Professor Emerita of Textile Design, serving as major advisor.  Gong received her Master of Arts in Textile Design in May of 2014.

Originally from Shandong, China, Gong combined the traditional paper printing techniques of woodcuts and silk screening with textile dyeing and discharge processes to print her personal imagery on silks and cottons.  Her illustrations are based on self-portraiture as well as door motifs, and depict what Gong describes as “a story of my study and growth” in a “multicultural space of imagination.”

The Hillestad Gallery is part of the Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design in the College of Education and Human Sciences at UNL.
