Exploring the Intersections of Fashion and Fandom through Star Wars

What does it mean to be a “geek”? That answer is rapidly evolving as traditionally geeky properties become more widely consumed, accepted, and celebrated. Where once upon a time “geek” painted a specific kind of picture—one that was distinctly masculine, “geek” is now worn as a badge of honor by a wider subset of fans that embrace femininity and fandom through dress. Join graduate student Adria Renee as she examines the intersections of fashion and fandom through the beloved American classic, STAR WARS.  Designing from a female fan perspective, this project will challenge the prevailing narratives around the geek identity and encourage viewers to more critically consider what it means to be a geek and what a geek, or more specifically, a STAR WARS fan can look like.

Join us for a conversation and reception with artist Adria Renee about her work, inspiration, and collection at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery on October 11th from 5:30-7:00pm.
