Jha receives hospitality teaching award

In recognition of his contributions to hospitality education, Dipra Jha, associate professor of practice in Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management, has received the John Wiley & Sons Innovation in Teaching Award from the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (ICHRIE).

Eventful summer prepares August graduate for teaching success

TLTE graduate student Connor Bohlken was selected for the prestigious Knowles Teaching Fellows Program. The five-year fellowship is designed to assist and sustain new teachers in math and science with leadership development, practitioner inquiry and community-building.

CEHS grad student becomes U.S. citizen

June 26 was a big day for Heejae Chung. It’s the day she became a U.S. citizen. 

Chung is a College of Education and Human Sciences student pursuing an educational specialist degree in school psychology from the Department of Educational Psychology. When she began taking CEHS graduate courses in the fall of 2015, Chung was interested in a master’s degree in special education, but last fall started focusing on the school psychology degree.

Xia receives prestigious Fulbright award

Yan Ruth Xia, Professor in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies (CYAF), has received a 2018-2019 Fulbright Distinguished Chair Award. The award provides a grant that will allow Xia to do both research and teaching in China during the fall and spring semesters of 2018-2019.

Nebraska research battles adolescent bullying, peer threat

Meredith Martin, assistant professor of educational psychology, is conducting research on factors contributing to peer threat to understand how children cope in different ways. “Feeling safe is a fundamental human need,” she said. “If children don’t feel safe, it’s much harder for them to learn other things, such as math, English or social skills."

Nebraska-produced ‘Anna’ collects top animation prize at festival

The first major festival screening of “Anna” also garnered the film’s first award. Nebraska’s Michael Burton, Kwakiutl Dreher and William Thomas created the animated short, which took three years to complete.

Feathers to fibers project earns environmental trust grant

Yiqi Yang’s ongoing research into converting poultry feathers and waste garments into commercially viable textiles has received grant support from the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln professor and his research team are focused on developing a product made from keratin fibers found in feathers and protein fibers in wool. Textiles made from these protein fibers have unparalleled performance properties, including moisture transmission, thermal insulation, soft hand and luster.

Mari Sandoz exhibit on East Campus through Sept. 7

An exhibition of historical clothing and other personal items once owned by Nebraska author Mari Sandoz is available for viewing through Sept. 7 on the second floor of the Human Sciences Building on East Campus at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. “Mari Sandoz: Crafting a Nebraskan Character” is hosted by the Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design in the College of Education and Human Sciences and is a partnership between the students of the TMFD graduate seminar, “Museums: Theory and Practice,” and the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society.

Zimbroff receives Fulbright Scholar Award to Brazil

Andrew Zimbroff, assistant professor and extension specialist in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design, has been selected for a Fulbright Scholar Award to Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ) in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil from Sept. 1-Dec. 31. During his time at ESALQ, a unit of the University of San Paulo, Zimbroff will be teaching, researching and promoting innovative agribusiness entrepreneurship.

CEHS and Malone Center begin partnership to support children and families

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS) is partnering with the Clyde Malone Community Center in Lincoln to provide a mutually beneficial opportunity for the successful development of children and families at the Malone Center and opportunities for practical experience for CEHS students. Malone Center Executive Director Kimberly Goins and CEHS Interim Dean Beth Doll signed a letter of agreement May 16 at a brief ceremony. The initial agreement is for five years.
