CYAF-authored article named best of 2012

A peer-reviewed article authored by UNL researchers in the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools has been named the 2012 Article of the Year by the academic journal School Psychology Review.

Susan Sheridan, the lead author of the article and director of the center, accepted the award Feb. 14 at the NASP's 2013 Annual Convention in Seattle. The award is presented for an article's contributions to research and practice in school psychology, its interest to the journal's readership, and its overall impact on advancing the profession.

Grandin discusses Asperger's Syndrome in front of large audience

Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University, led a very different interactive presentation Jan. 15. Grandin has Asperger’s Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, and her audience was preservice teachers and parents of children with Asperger’s. Grandin’s remarkable story has been told in a movie bearing her name.

Alex Trout (SECD) has received the Early Career Research Award given by the Council for Exceptional Children, Division for Research. The CEC Division for Research recognizes the critical role of research to both current practice in and the future of the field of Special Education.

Trout awarded $3.5 from IES for "On the Way Home" project

Alex Trout, Associate Research Professor in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders Center for Child and Family Well Being, was recently awarded $3.5 million from the Institute for Education Sciences for her project, "On the Way Home: Promoting Transition Outcomes in Youth with EBD or LD – An Efficacy and Replication Study."

This research project will continue to examine aftercare, which is a link in the continuum of services for youth served in the child welfare system and in out-of-home care.

Justice will present April 13 on promoting young children's literacy

Laura Justice will present April 13 on the topic, "Promoting Young Children's Knowledge About Print: Designing Systemic Early Literacy Interventions." Justice directs the Preschool Language and Literacy Research Lab at The Ohio State University.

Sherri Jones to chair Department of Special Education and Speech Disorders

Sherri Jones has been selected as the new chair of the Department of Special Education and Speech Disorders. Jones is currently a faculty member in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at East Carolina University.

While at ECU, Jones developed a significant research program focused on vestibular and balance function. She is also recognized as an outstanding teacher, both with undergraduate and graduate students.

Rasmussen 2011 CEHS Distinguished Alumnus

Jessie Kerry Rasmussen is the new president of the Buffett Early Childhood Fund, where she manages a $20 million annual portfolio for the purpose of promoting high quality birth to five experiences for children at risk in the United States. Her entire professional career has focused on improving outcomes for children, families and adults, especially vulnerable populations such as people with disabilities and families of low income.

Green uses Hollywood technology to aid the speech impaired

Jordan Green is featured in a new Husker Vision video, which appears on YouTube.

Green uses Hollywood motion capture technology to help people with speech impairments. His research will help make clinical decisions for patients with ALS, a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Green is a University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor of special education and communication disorders.
