Research Design: Intervention Development, 2016-2020
Objective: Develop, modify, and evaluate a supplementary web-based Health Literacy Transition Curriculum designed to improve the health literacy skills and health-related transition outcomes of secondary students with high-incidence disabilities.
Study Aims:
–Develop, enhance, and modify curriculum content.
–Conduct a series of iterative studies to test the implementation feasibility and social validity of the curriculum.
–Conduct a small randomized controlled trial (RCT) to begin to examine the effects of the supplementary web-based Health Literacy Transition Curriculum on the health literacy and health-related transition preparedness, knowledge, and skills of secondary students with high-incidence disabilities.
Curriculum Description: The curriculum will teach adolescents with high-incidence disabilities the how to’s of medical self-care not commonly taught in traditional health curricula. Content will include skills such as accessing and using insurance, medication management, managing medical emergencies, accessing health-related resources and services in the community, and health and transition IEPs.
