Hideo Suzuki, Ph.D.

Dr. Suzuki is a Japanese neuroscientist and assistant professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He received his Ph.D. in social psychology from Loyola University Chicago, by investigating social learning of aggression and its neurobiological correlates. As a postdoc, he joined the Early Emotional Development Program (Washington University School of Medicine) and Laureate Institute for Brain Research (Saint Francis Health System) and focused on various neuroimaging techniques (e.g., MRI, EEG, hyperscanning) to study brain structures and functions, cortisol reactivity, and pro-inflammatory cytokines in relation to child and adult depression. He launched the BEE lab in 2016 to investigate the neurobiological effects of stress on emotional behavior, especially bullying.

Matt Brooks, B.A.

Matthew Brooks is a second-year Master’s student in the Developmental and Learning Sciences (DLS) program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After serving as a high school English teacher, Matt came to the DLS program to explore more deeply the phenomenon of learning. He is particularly interested in exploring the impact nature exposure may have on cognition and other pathways by which exposure to nature may positively impact human mental health and learning outcomes. He hopes to eventually develop educational programming with foundations in psychology and neuroscience that is integrated with outdoor and environmental education.

Zach Short, M.A.

Zachary Short is a first-year doctoral student in the Developmental & Learning Sciences program at UNL. Coming from a background founded in Educational Counseling and Philosophy, Zach seeks to integrate himself into the field of Educational Neuroscience in the hopes of better addressing childhood trauma often found in K-12 settings. Based on his previous work with mental health and restorative practices, Zach directs his personal research towards understanding the neurological and psychological properties of post-traumatic growth. Currently he is examining said phenomena within the context of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

Sophie Tonjes is a third-year doctoral student in the Educational Psychology Department specializing in Developmental and Learning Sciences. She has a background in Social Work and Family Support Services, leading to her research interests in childhood trauma and emotional regulation. Sophie is interested in examining the effects of childhood trauma on emotional regulation. Specifically, she aims to investigate whether factors such as social support, buffer against the negative effects of childhood trauma. In the future, she hopes to work with educators and children implementing/bettering trauma-informed interventions/education within classrooms and/or school systems.
