Being selected to hold a named professorship is a distinct honor that recognizes the accomplishments of the recipient, the excellence of our college and the generosity of our supporters.

Richard Bischoff

Richard Bischoff, Ph.D. Gwendolyn A. Newkirk Professor of Leadership in Child, Youth And Family Studies

Richard Bischoff, Ph.D. Gwendolyn A. Newkirk Professor of Leadership in Child, Youth And Family Studies

Dr. Bischoff has served as chair of the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies since 2013. He is a past recipient of the CEHS Swanson Award for Teaching Excellence, the CEHS Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Nebraska Marriage and Family Therapist of the Year Award. He earned his Ph.D. from Purdue, a master’s degree from Auburn and a bachelor’s from Weber State. Dr. Bischoff ’s scholarship is focused on increasing access to high quality mental health care, especially to vulnerable and underserved populations. His work has included the innovative use of technology to bring services to rural communities and others.

This named professorship is made possible by a generous gift from Gwendolyn A. Newkirk through the University of Nebraska Foundation. Dr. Newkirk is a retired professor and former chair of UNL’s Department of Consumer Science and Education. She served as the first minority president of the American Home Economics Association.

Tim Carr

Timothy Carr, Ph.D. Jean Sundell Tinstman Professor of Nutrition and Health Sciences

Dr. Carr is chair of the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences. His numerous awards include a college Distinguished Teaching Award, the CEHS Swanson Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the University of Nebraska’s Dean’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Education. He earned a Ph.D. and master’s degrees from the University of Arizona and a bachelor’s degree from California Polytechnic State University. Dr. Carr’s research includes cholesterol and bile acid metabolism, atherosclerosis and heart disease, and the role of dietary fat, fiber and phytochemicals.

This named professorship is made possible by a generous gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation from Dale and Jean Tinstman. The gift honors the memory of Jean who was a graduate of the College of Education and Human Sciences and a longtime supporter of the college and UNL. Jean was a dietitian and an active member of the Lincoln community.


Ruth Heaton

Dr. Heaton has been a professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education since 1995. The University of Nebraska recognized her with an Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award, and she received the CEHS Swanson Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Heaton earned her Ph.D. at Michigan State, her master’s at the University of Vermont and her bachelor’s at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Heaton’s scholarship is focused on improving the mathematical learning of all students in preschool through elementary school, especially students considered most at-risk of school failure, through qualitative classroom-based studies of teaching and teacher learning. Additionally, she has developed several school partnerships to study the learning of math coaches and administrators related to supporting teachers as learners.

This named professorship is made possible by a generous gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation from the estate of Margaret G. Sadler who wished to honor her parents William and Mary Gilmartin and her sister Mollie. Margaret was a 1929 CEHS graduate.

Dr. Scharmann is chair of the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education. Among his numerous awards is an Outstanding Paper Award from the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, the Assessment Award for Closing the Gap from the Kansas State University Office of Assessment, and the Professorial Performance Award from Kansas State. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from UNL and his Ph.D. at Indiana University.

This named professorship is made possible by a generous gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation from the estate of Melvin and Jane Nore of Albion, Nebraska. Jane was a graduate of UNL’s College of Education and Human Sciences.
