CEHS Staff Council announces workshop topics for annual technology fair

CEHS Staff Council will offer a series of technology workshops Monday of spring break. Sessions will run concurrently at 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., and again at 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

Corkle named to receive 2012 Christa McAuliffe Prize from CEHS

Bryan Corkle, a science teacher in the O'Neill Public Schools, has been named the winner of the 2012 Christa McAuliffe Prize, awarded by the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Swearer to help launch Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation

This week, Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, will officially launch the Born This Way Foundation to promote tolerance and empowerment among youth. Susan Swearer, a UNL professor of school psychology and an anti-bullying expert, will be among a select group of scholars to help lead the kickoff event.

CEHS Office of Research sponsors research colloquium featuring Mcintyre Latta

Margaret Mcintyre Latta will speak about her recent book, Curricular Conversations: Play is the (MISSING) Thing.

Curricular Conversations is about play as a medium for teaching and learning that asks teachers and students to participate through adapting, changing, building and creating meaning. Its central theme is this: Play is the thing that brings aesthetic curricular complications near educators and their students, making the lived consequences very vivid, tangible, and possible.

Merriman, ALTC, recieves Staff Star award

Dave Merriman, ALTC, was honored February 17 with the CEHS Staff Star award. Dave is web master for the CEHS web site. Additionally Merriman does web programming, provides creative solutions for web-related educational and administrative projects, and assists students, faculty, and staff with more general technology issues.

Merriman's nominators had this to say about his work:
"Dave's most outstanding attribute is his knowledge and dependability."

I-Make/U-Buy: Textiles in the Electronic Retail Age

The Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery is pleased to announce its next exhibition, "I-Make/U-Buy: Textiles in the Electronic Retail Age." The exhibition runs February 27 to March 30 and will feature the work of Anne Burton, Audio Helkuik, Mary Pattvina, Eulanda Sanders, and Rachel Suntop.

Additionally, the Gallery Committee and the Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design is hosting an electronic retail seminar program, March 1, 2012.  Seminars will be in conjunction with the regularly scheduled classes. The public is invited to attend at no charge.

Greg Welch next speaker in Research Methodology Series, Feb. 24

There are many approaches and techniques available in an evaluator’s tool box. The Utilization Focused Evaluation (UFE) focuses on the utility of the evaluation. The goal of this approach is commonly phrased as “intended use by intended users,” meaning that the focus becomes to involve all stakeholders in the evaluation process. This presentation will discuss the basic premises behind the UFE approach, along with the role of UFE in different types of evaluations and across evaluation settings.

Guy Trainin 2012 recipient of Donald R. Swanson award

CEHS is proud to announce Guy Trainin as winner of the 2012 Donald R. Swanson award. Funded by a generous gift from Donald R. Swanson, this award honors exemplary teaching in the College of Education & Human Sciences and carries a $12,500 cash gift for the recipient.

Trainin's work focuses on translational research and teaching in literacy education. Trainin sees translational research as a means to connect theory and experiments with classroom applications in rigorous and transparent ways, exploring the causal chain in applied settings.
